Education: In 1977, graduated from the Kyiv Engineering and Construction Institute with a specialty in Mechanical Engineering.

Academic Degree: Defended his doctoral thesis on “Patterns of Self-Organization and Regulation of Human Circulation” in 2008 in the specialty “Biophysics”. Ievgen Nastenko candidate thesis titled “Development of Algorithms for Non-Invasive Express Assessment of the Cardiovascular System State during Correction of Acquired Heart Defects with Artificial Circulation” was defended in 1989 in the specialty “Control in Biological and Medical Systems.”

General Information: Ievgen Nastenko is a leading expert in the development of information technology for the analysis of clinical and biomedical information. Conducts research in the field of systemic physiology, systems analysis, and synergetics using mathematical statistics and mathematical modeling methods.

Ievgen Nastenko began his career in the Laboratory of Medical Cybernetics of the F.G. Yanovsky Institute of Tuberculosis, Pulmonology, and Thoracic Surgery, holding the positions of Senior Engineer and Senior Software Engineer (1981-1986). Later, Ievgen Nastenko worked in the Artificial Circulation Laboratory of the Kyiv Research Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery (1986 – 1992), where he held the positions of Senior and Leading Researcher. From 1992 to 2005, Ievgen Nastenko served as the Head of the Department of Informatics and Prospective Planning of the Kyiv Research Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery. Since 2005, Ievgen Nastenko has been the Head of the Department of Information Technology and Mathematical Modeling of Physiological Processes at the M.M. Amosov National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine.

With extensive scientific and research experience, in 2005,  Ievgen Nastenko began lecturing for students of the Interuniversity Medical Engineering Faculty of NTUU “KPI” (now, Faculty of Biomedical Engineering), holding positions of Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor, Professor, and since September 1, 2011, the Head of the Department of Medical Cybernetics and Telemedicine (now, the Department of Biomedical Cybernetics). During his tenure, he has consistently worked with young specialists, graduate students, as well as with intern students and diploma students at the M.M. Amosov National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, and the National Technical University of Ukraine “KPI”. He has supervised 3 candidates of sciences.

He is a regular participant in domestic and international scientific congresses, conferences, and seminars on surgery, cardiovascular surgery, and cardiology. Ievgen Nastenko’s scientific achievements have been repeatedly awarded at World Congresses. Under the direct participation of Ievgen Nastenko, a wide range of systems for computer diagnostics of acute cardiovascular insufficiency has been developed, implemented, and improved.

Ievgen Nastenko, based on original clustering analysis algorithms, developed a system for safe reproduction of functional dependencies of biophysical and physiological indicators of the body based on the data of scheduled examinations of cardio-surgical patients. With its help, functional characteristics of the heart’s pumping function, oxygen transport characteristics, as well as families of dependencies of blood pressure indicators and heart rate, reflecting the state of the human body’s microcirculatory network, were reproduced.

Extensive multi-stage research on blood pressure indicators was conducted, revealing that their symmetries, close to the golden ratio, reflect the harmony of the heart, arterial vessels, and capillary network’s functioning. New methods for diagnosing regulatory reserves of the circulatory system have been developed.

Based on original research on the transport function of human blood circulation and the obtained characteristics of systemic oxygen transport, the first computer simulator with artificial circulation was created. It was widely used for training perfusiologists both in Ukraine and in Western and Eastern European countries and received an award at the 5th European Congress on Extracorporeal Circulation Technology in 1993 in Arles, France, as the best work on artificial circulation safety. Together with his subordinate research team, Ievgen Nastenko created several generations of cellular-automaton models of the capillary network. The models demonstrated the high adaptive ability of the capillary network, including in cases of heart rhythm disturbances. These studies were highly rated at European and global congresses and remain unparalleled. Along with the characteristics of the systemic oxygen transport of the human body, they were awarded as the most original work at the 10th European Congress on Extracorporeal Circulation Technology in 2003 in Funchal, Portugal.

Ievgen Nastenko is engaged in the study of the kinematics of spiral contraction of the heart’s ventricles and the creation of corresponding biophysical models for normal and remodeled ventricles.

Ievgen Nastenko recent research is dedicated to the active behavior of muscular arterial vessels, studying microcirculatory mechanisms of systemic arterial pressure formation, and the pathogenesis of arterial hypertension. In addition, under his co-supervision, current research topics explore helical blood flow in the aorta and main arteries, providing new evaluations and adjustments for circulatory disorders of various etiologies.
