General information

The Department of Biomedical Cybernetics traces its origins from the Faculty of Informatics and Computing Technology and was established in 2001. Valentin Yatsenko was appointed as the head of the department, under whose guidance the first batch of students was admitted. From 2009, the department was led by Ievgen Nastenko, and from 2023, the leadership was passed on to Svitlana Alkhimova.

In 2003, as a result of cooperation between the National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute” and the O.O. Bogomolets National Medical University, the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering began its activities based on the department.

The educational process and scientific developments are facilitated by 23 staff members from the teaching faculty. The department employs 5 Doctors of Sciences and 8 Candidates of Sciences (PhD).

The structure of the department is determined by the contingent of students, the nature and scope of educational, methodological, scientific, and educational work. According to the educational-professional program, graduates of the department receive qualifications in specialty 122 “Computer Science”.

The department’s training plan includes various disciplines that allow for comprehensive knowledge in computer sciences, including programming, databases, web development, neural networks, biomedical informatics, signal and data processing. The educational process is carried out using the latest methods and technologies with the use of technical educational tools.

Students study according to European standards in the fields of medical and biological informatics and cybernetics. The department’s study programs are based on the recommendations of the International Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Additionally, global and Ukrainian needs and trends in healthcare are taken into account in the educational process.

Scientific research conducted by the department staff encompasses a broad spectrum of tasks in biomedical cybernetics, including computer support for biomedical research, development of software-hardware complexes for assessing the human body’s condition, and informational and educational technologies. Studies are being conducted to develop new methods of modeling and classification. The results of the department’s scientific research are validated by experimental tests on real data, provided by the department’s partner organizations.

The atmosphere of scientific exploration and idea generation actively engages students and young professionals. This fosters the development of their professional thinking with a practical orientation, constructiveness, a clear understanding of feasibility, and confidence in achieving results. This, in turn, ensures the high quality of graduate work, most of which receive “excellent” grades.

The professional activities of the department’s graduates encompass data analysis methods, modeling, design tools, development, testing, and implementation of software products, and creating databases and database management systems in various scientific and technical fields. The educational process facilitates the future professional growth of the department’s graduates not only in the primary directions of information technologies but also in the digitalization of the healthcare sector.

The Department of Biomedical Cybernetics has been successfully operating for over 20 years. During this period, more than 1000 highly qualified specialists in computer technology and modeling in biology and medicine have been trained. Today, the department’s graduates can be found in academic and educational institutions, at companies like Materialise Ukraine, EPAM Systems, Samsung R&D Institute, Fortrea, Intego Group, and others.

The department actively collaborates with GMDH LLC on data analysis, forecasting, modeling, classification, clustering, and time series analysis.
